QUICK BUCK TOURISM CHALLENGES THE PLANET’S LARGEST CAVE/ LEARN 30 IDIOMS WITH “AT”
At least 4 km long and more than 140 m high and wide in parts, Hang Son Doong is the world’s largest known cave passage with enormous chambers that can comfortably fit a 747 airplane or an entire New York City block full of 40-story buildings. Since 1990 over 150 kilometres of caves have been explored in Central Vietnam. The cave had its own weather system and a completely unique eco system. According to the assessment of UNESCO, the karst formation of Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park has evolved since the Palaeozoic (some 400 million years ago) and so is the oldest major karst area in Asia and Phong Nha displays an impressive amount of evidence of earth’s history.
It was discovered by a local in 1991 and the noise originates from the 2.5-km-long underground river that gives Hang Son Doong, or Mountain River Cave, its name. It lies in the heart of the Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park on the Laotian border. It can be reachable only after an arduous nine-hour trek and set in jungle so thick that many groups have had trouble finding the entrance or missed it completely.
The cave is five times larger than nearby caves like Phong Nha Cave and Hang En, the third largest cave in the world previously considered the biggest cave in Vietnam. Its mammoth chambers extend so far that explorers have called Son Doong an “infinite cave.” Sơn Đoong overtook Deer Cave in Malaysia in 2009 to take the title of the world’s largest cave. The cave runs for approximately 9 kilometres and is punctuated by 2 large dolines or swallow holes, which are areas where the ceiling of the cave has collapsed. The dolines allow sunlight to enter sections of the cave and has resulted in the growth of trees as well as other vegetation. This run was stopped by a large, 60-metre (200 ft) high calcite wall, which was named The Great Wall of Vietnam. Behind the Great Wall of Vietnam were found cave pearls the size of baseballs, an abnormally large size.
The planned construction projects to make the cave more accessible to tourists could harm the formation’s unique environment as the double-bladed sword. Unbelievably, there are current plans for a large Vietnamese entity to cut down a route through the World Heritage Site and build a cable car to Sơn Đoong to carry tourists to Doline 2. An international online movement against this development has the intention of informing Vietnam about the concern for the preservation of Hang Sơn Đoong.
