THE TET’S YELLOW OCHNA/LEARN 30 SYNONYMS
Yellow Ochna should be used to indicate the most celebrated flower in the South of Vietnam. It also has another rare, hybrid, similar species called Black Ochna. The Yellow Ochna is formally called Ochna Integerrima as one the 150 plants belonging to the Ochnaceae. It profusely blooms on Tet holidays, the Vietnamese Lunar New Year. Flowers are often followed with cute shiny black berries on bright red sepals that resemble the iconic cartoon mouse’s ear. So, it’s also coloquially called the Mickey Mouse plant in English.
South Vietnamese believe that Yellow Ochna represents wealth, good fortune and passionate love. It’s considered to be an exotic plant in this region. Each blossom is abundant in bright, sun-colored petals framed by oval, emerald-colored leaves. It typically comes into flower since December until January. The leaves are of evergreen petiolate type, and the sturdy trunk is ideal for bonsai art.The plant is often cultivated as a bonsai-sized miniature tree. Its self-pollinating flowers will generally appear in April or May in the U. S. if the plant is not forced into flower earlier in the year. Its leaves are removed about one month before that date to let the sap concentrated into the buds for a spectacular flowering. This flowering is believed to herald good luck for the New Year. In a sense Tet’s like Christmas and Thanksgiving combined into one.
Tet is the time to forget the past troubles and enjoy the beginning of a new year. Each family lives in a sense of closeness instilled with great resolution and immense nostalgia in the New Year. Vietnamese Tet can be depicted in this common saying “Thịt mỡ Dưa hành Câu Đối đỏ – Cây nêu Tràng Pháo Bánh Chưng Xanh”- “Stewed Steak pork with Pickled Onions amongst Red Calligraphic Verses-Evil Warding Pole over Firecrackers above Steamed Square Cake”. The peach blossom (Hoa Đào) in warm pink seems to warm up the dry cold of the North while the sunny South is scorching up in flourishing yellow ochna (Hoa Mai). Peach gets along with Steamed Square Cake (Bánh Chưng) in the North; in the South does Steamed Log Cake (Bánh Tét) go. Glutinous rice is used to make both of them but formed into two different shapes-square and cylindral. The Tet Lunar New Year in Vietnam is truly varied in fantastic features depending on each region but unanimously embraced in thanks to God for Happy New Year of Peace, Safety and Prosperity.
